CENSUS RESOURCES

Canadian Censuses

The census resources are organized by the year in which the census was taken, but note that not all types of documentation are available for all years. Note as well that although many different schedules (Population, Housing, Farming and Agriculture, Industry and so forth) were included in each census enumeration, the information provided here pertains only to the Population Schedule.

On average, the Population Censuses from 1911 to 1951 each had about three dozen questions. As you will see by examining the schedules for each of these years, the questions that were asked vary somewhat from one census year to the next. For example, the 1931 census asks if the household has a radio, while the 1941 census asks about war service. While many variables are consistent across the censuses, the variations reflect the social context in which the census was taken as well as the concerns of the time.
