The Jacob Freedman Memorial Award
The award was established by the Ottawa Jewish Historical Society through the generosity of the Jacob Freedman Charitable Foundation.
Purpose of the fund
To offer an award to a undergraduate or graduate student registered at the University of Ottawa in recognition of the excellence of his/her work in the field of Jewish studies and its significance to the Jewish community of the Cities of Ottawa and Gatineau, Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec.

Value of award: $ 1,000 minimum - $2,000 maximum
Number of awards: 1 minimum
Frequency of awards: annually
Level of awards: undergraduate or graduate
Eligibility criteria
Applicants must:
- be registered (full-time or part-time) in an undergraduate or graduate program at the Faculty of Arts at the University of Ottawa
- submit high quality papers OR an outline of a project on Jewish studies which has significance to the Jewish community of Ottawa.
Note: The subjects must be approved in advance by the Ottawa Jewish Historical Society.
Application procedures
Applications must be submitted to the Director of the Institute of Canadian Studies and must include:
- a resume;
- a copy of academic transcripts;
- a one page outline of the proposed project or a completed paper on Jewish studies.
If the application is to assist research, the applicant is required to submit a budget. In addition, he/she will have to submit his/her paper to the Ottawa Jewish Historical Society upon completion of a paper related to the research.
